Reflecting on Teach-Less, Learn-More Month of May
On May 1st, I had made the following post on my CO2 Fit Facebook page:
“This month, I’m teaching & training less and instead investing in trying new things and different experiences. That means finally trying hot yoga, crossfit, capoiera, and taking other instructors’ classes near & far. So I can expand my horizon, push myself out of comfort of the small pond I live in (though it’s warm, cozy, and friendly), and SHIFT. So I can continue to inspire and motivate others to do the same. Who wants to join me?
And so my month of learning started…
with Bikram Yoga. My learning – the heat and length of class (90 minutes) is pretty challenging but it does help to clear your mind of outside thoughts when you are simply focusing on breathing and not passing out.
(You don’t want to see the photo of me doing Bikram yoga – but this photo is much easier on the eyes – you’re welcome!)
then Crossfit. My learning – this is right up my alley, the intensity, the short super-hard workouts, the bare-bone facility, all of it. well, except for having to run. I was sore for DAYS from running, which I never enjoy doing. Plus you really need to know what you are doing to prevent yourself from hurting – I wouldn’t recommend it for any beginner exerciser who doesn’t have the correct eye-body coordination or body awareness.
(Well, I forgot to take photos of me doing the workout, but I bet I looked this cool doing it, I swear!)
then taking various Les Mills classes taught by other amazing instructors in RVA area…followed by kick-butt GRIT session taught by the master trainer Evelyn Ortmann
(Evelyn & me after finishing our workout – we still had enough left for a partner push-up pose and a smile!)
And now I can’t believe the month is almost over – I feel like I didn’t get to experience as much in one month. My learning – it was an amazing experience to step outside of my own comfort zone and trying new things. Learning from others can be so much more rewarding when you have a right attitude – truly open to learning instead of trying to judge and compare myself to others. And this experience is something I want to continue FOREVER. Not just for the month of May, but for the months and years moving forward.
So I’m extending this challenge – it’s now summer of learning and trying new things! Stay tuned for more new experiences and learning I share from those experiences. Let me know if you’d like to join in this long-term challenge – it’s always fun when you are stepping out of comfort zone with other!
